One of the most frequent diagnosed mental disorders in children and adolescents is depression. Depression affects 3 percent to 8 percent of adolescents. Of particular concern regarding young people with depression is the increased risk of suicide that accompanies mood disorders. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among teens, and suicude attempts are highest during mid-adolescence.
Depressive Symptoms
Mental health professionals characterize the symptoms of major depression as:
- depressed mood
- diminished interest or enjoyment in activities
- change in appetite, weight or sleep
- agitation
- fatigue
- difficulty concentrating
- feelings of worthlessness or guilt
- thoughts of death or suicide
Young people may also exhibit:
- irritability or anger
- cry more often than usual
- act excessively tired or bored
- be critical toward others, as well as self-critical or hypersensitive
- act distant with friends and family
- engage in self-injurious behavior
- decline in grades, test performance, and homework completion
